The earliest roman calendar had only 10 months / 304 days. There's still traces of that in the names today (e.g. DECember used to be the 10th month)

There's a theory that ancient romans just ignored the missing 61 days in the solar year, since they were in the middle of winter.

So effectively January and February were "dead time" were everyone agreed nothing happened - time doesn't exist. Just wait around until the sun comes out again.

That's a concept I could get behind. 👍 ⌘ [Read more](https://front-end.social/@mxbck/109766738444288534) 2023-01-29T09:58:26Z ****

✏️ New Post: A few days ago [@matuzo](https://front-end.social/@matuzo) kindly pointed out to me that I haven't been writing a lot lately. I was shocked and launched an immediate investigation.

Here's why I don't write, and why my reasons are probably bullshit.

"Declarative Design" has a simple core concept: giving up control and embracing the fluid nature of the web. It's the antithesis to imperative step-by-step programming.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I very much agree with [@adactio](https://mastodon.social/@adactio) here when he says the best approach to take on a project depends on the culture and mindset of the people behind it.

Analytical thinking or systems thinking?

Are you an Amadeus Mozart or a Miles Davis?

[@adactio](https://mastodon.social/@adactio) utility class frameworks VS the cascade.

fixed breakpoints VS fluid scales.

hardcoded layouts VS container queries.

The difference in culture/mindset results in all these heated discussions, but ultimately, the medium should inform the approach.

The whole Twitter affair around Halli is so disheartening. Not because of Elon, who sticks to his signature douchebag mix of ignorance and performative cruelty.

In the middle of relaunching a client website. For some reason, the old site shows a full-page blocking overlay with a giant loading spinner \*anytime\* an API call is made.

Then it re-renders individual components, each with their own tiny little loading animations.

I'm fairly certain that codebase is about 80% spinners and the dev responsible for this has a fetish for them or something ⌘ [Read more](https://front-end.social/@mxbck/110034015676601264) 2023-03-16T17:05:00Z ****

I've seen a lot of "frontend dev will be replaced by AI" takes in the last week. This is A) wrong and B) comes from the tired old stance of "frontend is not real programming".

Personally, I'm not the least bit worried. Good frontend code has to deal with so many messy, unpredictable things. It's a huge interconnected system that is really hard to describe accurately.

Backend code, on the other hand, might be more vulnerable.

Josh has a great new post on all this:
