Now reading that Brinkmann was taught drums by Jaki Liebezeit.. This all makes total sense. Liebezeit's e-t system:

\- Dot means a hit with one hand. Dash means two hits with one hand, with the duration of two dots.

\- Dots and dashes are always played by alternate hands.

\- The second hit in a dash is always quieter than the first, even to the point of silence. It can be almost as loud as the first hit but never as loud or louder.

\- Accents are only possible after a dash.

I've been thinking some more about how little code relates to the sound that comes out of it, that the code is more like a map that you can't read until you already know the sound that it's a mapping (and generating). I'll be talking about this at the groove workshop in January, abstract here:

Next week I'm going to do a short performance as part of Hybrid live coding workshop. My performance is going to be called "live coding without anything". I'm going to try live coding myself. Here's my proposal:

"Is it possible to live code without a computer, without even a notation, indeed without anything but a voice?

Coder 6: I completely agree. Live coding is all about experimentation and trying out new things. It doesn't really matter what language you use as long as you're having fun and creating something cool.

Coder 7: Speaking of experimentation, have any of you tried live coding with fish?

(The other coders stare at Coder 7 in disbelief)

Just asked ChatGPT to "Write a script for a scene where live coders argue about fish"

This is what it came up with:

Scene: A conference room at the annual Live Coding Convention. A group of live coders are gathered around a table, deep in debate.

I announced [https://sun.tidalcycles.org/](https://sun.tidalcycles.org/) on Sunday, the schedule filled with 72 live coders in a couple of days, peaked at 144 viewers enjoying huge diversity of 20 minute performances..

All done without any twitter announcements, just one facebook post that got ~2 shares. A mastodon post got 115 boosts. Self-hosted forum posts reached people directly.

Heh it's funny coming across a poor social interaction I did 10 years ago

As a free/open source developer, many of the posts I see here about quote boosting just come across as massively self-obsessed and entitled. The thought might be worthwhile but the tone is often way off in a weird subtle way and this sort of thing can be really demotivating for the people actually doing the work.

Having a look at my family tree on a subscription website.. You get two weeks free to give them your data, before they start selling it back to you.

My family history was pretty lost to various traumas so it's amazing to be able to build a huge family tree in a couple of hours, and begin to understand those traumas a bit more. "Making grammars: from computing with shapes to computing with things" by Terry Knight and George Stiny. I've been puzzling over Stiny's book for a while but this paper is an easier way in. I find it really weird how journalists are absolutely obsessed with elections. You never hear them talk about any political motivation apart from getting elected. If some politician tries to do something or make some point it's \_always\_ cast as some calculated move based on likelihood of getting elected.

But presumably a lot of people cast their vote based on who is going to do the most good. So why not talk about that sometimes as well? This level of cynicism is just awful. ⌘ [Read more](https://post.lurk.org/@yaxu/109630252372858941) 2023-01-04T19:59:00Z **yaxu: “I think Jess and I would arriv…”**
