Now reading that Brinkmann was taught drums by Jaki Liebezeit.. This all makes total sense. Liebezeit's e-t system:

\- Dot means a hit with one hand. Dash means two hits with one hand, with the duration of two dots.

\- Dots and dashes are always played by alternate hands.

\- The second hit in a dash is always quieter than the first, even to the point of silence. It can be almost as loud as the first hit but never as loud or louder.

\- Accents are only possible after a dash.

I've been thinking some more about how little code relates to the sound that comes out of it, that the code is more like a map that you can't read until you already know the sound that it's a mapping (and generating). I'll be talking about this at the groove workshop in January, abstract here:

Next week I'm going to do a short performance as part of Hybrid live coding workshop. My performance is going to be called "live coding without anything". I'm going to try live coding myself. Here's my proposal:

"Is it possible to live code without a computer, without even a notation, indeed without anything but a voice?

Coder 6: I completely agree. Live coding is all about experimentation and trying out new things. It doesn't really matter what language you use as long as you're having fun and creating something cool.

Coder 7: Speaking of experimentation, have any of you tried live coding with fish?

(The other coders stare at Coder 7 in disbelief)

Just asked ChatGPT to "Write a script for a scene where live coders argue about fish"

This is what it came up with:

Scene: A conference room at the annual Live Coding Convention. A group of live coders are gathered around a table, deep in debate.

One nice thing about research 'impact' I picked up recently is that it's not something ever that researchers can do, it's something that other people do with your research. If a researcher talks about creating or doing impact, or impacting 'the public' they've got the wrong end of the stick. Idea: a crowdfunding platform for people who don't need any money at the moment. People can sign up to donate small amounts to people who share stuff for free, but only in the months when they need it. They might never need it, but it could make life decisions with less precarity.

I closed my fairly healthy ko-fi when I got my fellowship funding but it would have been nice to have just paused it for 7 years. [https://jar-online.net/en](https://jar-online.net/en)

But submission to publishing takes up to 12 months. You're not allowed to publish pre-prints in the meantime. Plus the read-only license they use (cc-by-nc-nd) isn't \_really\_ open access (and my funder mandates cc-by), and there doesn't seem to be a possibility to pick a more permissive one.

This was such a fun performance with Yee-King. The best bits for me are the endings, e.g. at 18:20.. It was a totally improvised collab, and ending sections is always the tricky part in improv.. Both reading the situation and feeling the shape of the music tapering and both just stopping at the same moment, when it feels right. It's magic when it happens

I've gotten interested in the idea of being able to play as live coder with instrumental musicians without use of click track or having the others follow my tempo.. also without use of tempo trackers which add a lot of constraints or don't work.

Live coders should be able to hear a drummer say '1 2 3 4' and then start at the same time as them, and join them in jumping between time signatures etc.

Imagining turntable-style slider for tempo, jog wheel for phase and an additional footswitch for tap tempo that can be used ... ⌘ [Read more](https://post.lurk.org/@yaxu/113554567437489591) 2024-11-27T11:33:36Z ****
I remember playing with MPEG4-sa a couple of decades ago. A file format that was basically code, so could produce high-quality sound at extremely bitrates.

I'm not sure if it was ever used in anything apart from maybe an experimental karaoke machine?

There's a counterfactual here were this took hold properly and all music files became generative audio.

Just renewed the domain for the [https://runme.org/](https://runme.org/) software art directory for another year. It's now just a static scrape of the original site, and most of the projects it points to are dead links. Sure, it's not good to worship tech figureheads and furnish them with narcissistic supply. For similar reasons it's also not good to abandon free/open source tech just because someone associated with it has done something bad.

I'm still going to be self-hosting wordpress, even though someone I've never heard of is suing someone else. I'm also going to be continuing to use the GPL/AGPL license despite one of the authors saying questionable things about paedophilia etc.

I just think it's best to stop associating works p ... ⌘ [Read more](https://post.lurk.org/@yaxu/113606295572269844)
